Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani is back at it. After spending the last 3-4 years, dabbling into the wireless phone market, providing affordable telecommunication and portable internet data services, the industry mogul is distributing TVs to rope users into binging entertainment content through internet.
Come Thursday, September 05, 2019, the JioFiber broadband service will also be launched. The service also comes with a High-Definition television and a set-top box, sans extra charges for annual lifetime subscribers. The offer by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., includes subscriptions to most premium streaming services with prices starting from 700 rupees a month.
To gain the upper hand in the streaming business against well-funded competitors like Netflix, Amazon.com and Walt Disney Co.’s Hotstar, Jio will need to go beyond just offering cheaper access via bundled services.
If JioFiber begins collaborating with content producers and begins presenting its own exclusive content, it could disrupt the streaming market, as the prices are already “one tenth of the global standard”, according to Ambani.
