Mahendra Singh Dhoni, also called Mahi is one of the most popular Indian cricketers. Putting his great leadership skill to test, Dhoni serves as the former captain of the Indian Cricket team. Known for his excellent wicketkeeping skills, MS Dhoni had always been a gem to the Indian team and management even in multiple hard situations. MS Dhoni made his first debut in One Day International (ODI) cricket in December 2004, playing against Bangladesh team. After a year, he also debuted in test cricket against Sri Lanka. Today we will discuss about the background and journey of the most loved Indian cricketer MS Dhoni.


Mahendra Singh Dhoni alias Mahi was born on 7th July 1981 in Ranchi, Jharkhand to Pan Singh and Devki Devi. He has a sister Jayanti and a brother Narendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni’s family originally belonged to Almora district of Uttrakhand. Mahi completed his studies from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir School in Ranchi, Jharkhand.  In his school days, Dhoni used to play badminton and football. He used to play as a goalkeeper in his football team.

Once he was sent to play for a local cricket club by his football coach. It was the match in which he impressed everyone with his wicket-keeping skills. His rocking wicket keeping skills resulted in getting him a regular post of wicketkeeper at the Commando Cricket Club.

Form 2001-2003, he served Indian Railways as Train Ticker Examiner (TTE) at the Kharagpur railway station.

Personal Life

On 4th July 2010, MS Dhoni married to Sakshi Singh Rawat. The couple now has a daughter, Ziva. Earlier MS Dhoni had been in a relationship with a girl named Priyanka Jha during 2002. The relationship was intense but short-lived as she met with an accident and lost her life.

MS Dhoni started dating Sakshi Singh Rawat in 2008 after they met at a hotel. Sakshi used to work as an intern after completing her graduation in Hotel Management from Aurangabad.  Incidentally, both of them knew each other in their childhood and their fathers were also colleagues. Sakshi Singh is 7 years younger to MS Dhoni.

Both of them dated for 2 years and married in 2010 on 4th July. After he won the world cup in 2011, film director Neeraj Pandey decided to make a biopic on his whole Journey and his achievements. The film was named as Dhoni: The untold story and released on 30th September 2016.

When India got out from the World Cup 2007 in the first round, angry fans vandalized his house. During this time he had to seek police protection.


Playing for Bihar U-19 team in 1998, Dhoni began his career. In 1999-2000, MS Dhoni debuted in Ranji Trophy by playing for Bihar. His brilliant performances in Deodhar trophy, Duleep Trophy, India tour of Kenya grabbed the attention of National team selectors. After this, Dhoni was selected to play for Indian in 2004.

MS Dhoni has received Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards several times. Dhoni got his first Test Man of the Match award in 2008 against Australia. It was Sri Lanka in India ODI when MS Dhoni received his first Man of the Series award in 2005-2006. He has also received ICC player of the year award for 2 consecutive years in 2008-2009. Dhoni is also the recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007 and Padma Shri award in 2009.


MS Dhoni announced his retirement from International Test Cricket in 2014. The reason which he cited of retirement was the strain of playing all formats of cricket. He also expressed his desire to concentrate better on playing T20s and ODIs. On 4th January 2017, Dhoni stepped down from the position of Captain of the Indian ODI and T20 cricket teams.onc
